China is the oldest surviving civilization on Earth. That alone says quite a lot. During all of the upheavals and migrations of the last several thousand years, it has existed exactly where it does right now. Without a doubt, it will continue to do so for quite some time.
There is no benefit to attempting to 'contain' a nation that does so much for the world.
Together, we can solve the world's problems. Opposed, we are only creating new ones.
As we start slipping into a new dark age and throwing away the future so a few greedy people can try to control things, let's remember that the path is still being pioneered. We have been squandering that here in the US so that a privileged few can attempt to rule the world.
We must realign our foreign policy to accept the equality of all nations and our position among them. Our greed culture here can stand to learn much from the wisdom culture of China. Superimposing the motives of a malevolent few on other nations is an almost laughable act of projection. The world doesn't need a hegemon, and so long as we attempt to be one, there will be resistance.
On the question of Taiwan, we need to remember something very important: The ruling factions of Taiwan are largely composed to mainland Chinese people who saw that they were on the losing end of the civil war. This is akin to what would happen if the confederates, on seeing that they were losing the American Civil War, left the mainland and took over Puerto Rico. What would the US government do? While a new Taiwanese identity has taken root, the potential consequences of any American intervention in this dispute far outweigh the benefits.
Oftentimes, we hear our largest enterprises complaining about the loss of intellectual property to China. Get ready for this: Who sent it over there? Our largest enterprises offshored American jobs to a country that holds property to be the property of the people. What did they think would happen?
The People's Republic of China is here to stay. We will be better served doing business as equals than attempting to control them. Together, we can tackle the larger challenges that we face as one humanity.
