The Persians were liberated by Cyrus the Great in around 550 B.C.E. Since then, they have always refused to be dominated, and they will always continue to do so.
While they have been invaded and occupied, they have never been truly conquered or colonized, and you can consider it a defining characteristic of their civilization that they will never allow that to happen.
Peace and reconciliation is the only path.
Iran, formerly known as Persia, is still the home of the Persians. They will not be dominated now, either, and it is absolutely foolish to try. Understand full well, if the people there don't want the Islamic Republic, it will be gone in a flash. Also understand that the Islamic Republic was founded after a revolution against a brutal regime that was installed by the United States. We need to realize that the internal mechanisms of repression will only be dismantled at a time when the existing regime can feel safe in the world, and we need to remember that many of those mechanisms were introduced by the US.
We need to take a hard look in the mirror and ask ourselves what makes us any different. Even in the small town I live in now, the County just had to pay out over $9,000,000 to the family of a man who was brutally killed by staff at the county jail. No one was held criminally accountable. US citizens are routinely beaten and killed by our police even for participating in peaceful protests. We must be the change we wish to see in the world, and we're not doing a very great job of that right now.
For all the hand wringing about the behaviors of the government of the Islamic Republic of Iran, we should remember one thing: Since before the dust even settled and the guns went quiet, western governments and their allies have been trying to bring the revolutionary forces down. They have never been fully given a chance to rejoin the world on equal footing. Because of this, they have been reacting to very real threats the whole time.
The only way forward is a unilateral declaration of peace and acceptance of responsibility. We must recognize that the threats they face are real and that they have been coming from us. We must also recognize that the healing there can only begin when the people are allowed to grow on equal footing with the rest of the world.
